EF’s story began with founder Bertil Hult. He established the company after discovering the power of immersive learning while working in London. Despite struggling with dyslexia, Hult found that full immersion helped him learn English more effectively than traditional classroom instruction. What began as a small language course for Swedish students quickly grew into a global organization. They expanded throughout Europe, opened schools in Japan in the early 1970s, and entered the United States in the 1980s.
By focusing on growth through revenue rather than outside investment, EF steadily expanded its reach. By 2014, the company operated in 55 countries with tens of thousands of employees. Leadership has since transitioned to the founder’s sons, while EF continues to prioritize educational value, cultural exchange, and student safety.
